The other day, I reached into the cupboard for one of my favorite coffee mugs. This particular mug says: “Enjoy the journey.” But in that moment, I was not enjoying the journey. And I didn’t want to be reminded to enjoy the journey. So, I chose another mug :) Maybe there’s something in your life you’ve been trying to heal, or create, or change for a long time. Maybe your physical healing is taking much longer than you expected. Maybe you’ve been working to attract more abundance, and you wonder why it seems to come more easily to other people. Maybe you see friends find their soulmate or life partner while you’ve felt alone for years. You keep doing what you know to do. You keep taking steps. And yet, some days you may wonder: Why isn't this happening? How much longer is this going to take? And that’s when people sometimes say to us: "Have faith… be patient." They mean well. But when you’re tired, discouraged, or wondering why something is taking so long, that kind of advice is just… irritating. That was their shorthand for "doing the journey." But it pointed to a deeper understanding of what the journey really is. The journey is a choice. When you want to heal, create, or change something in your life, you can never predict how long that journey will take. And each step you take along that path is a choice. It may take five steps. It may take fifty. It may take five hundred. You simply don’t know. And as my mentor explained, you don’t want to take forty-nine steps, throw up your hands, and quit. Because what if one more step—the 50th step—was the one that would finally bring you the outcome, the satisfaction, the fulfillment you desired? Do you really want to give up now and deny yourself that experience? Keep taking the next step, and the next, and the next, until you reach a level of completion and satisfaction that makes your heart say, “Yes, this is it. I did it.” That's what it means to "do the five or fifty." It means consciously engaging in the journey and not making yourself wrong for where you are. It means staying open. It means letting go of paths that don’t feel right. It means continuing to move in the direction of what you truly want, even when you can’t yet see more than the next step. Up until the age of 40, I never imagined I would get married or permanently partner with someone. The idea really never resonated with me. Then one day, while visiting friends on Kauaʻi, I sat on my hotel room balcony, looking at the sun setting over the ocean. I felt a clarity well up inside me. I suddenly knew I was ready for a partner. I felt ready to share my life with a woman with whom I could co-create a fun and meaningful life. So, I expressed that desire out loud to the Universe, from my heart. And then I let it go. Over the next year or so, I met several women. Each time I met someone, I didn’t wonder anxiously, Is she the one? Is she the one? I wasn’t trying to make anything happen. I would simply stay curious and take the next step. When something didn’t feel like the right path, I let it go. I didn’t need to know how many steps remained. I was doing the journey. Then one day, a woman and her friend showed up at one of my weekly Lemurian wisdom workshops. For some reason, my mom had decided to attend that evening (and to this day I still have no idea why), and the woman sat right beside her. That woman was Mamiko, and she's been my partner now for more than 20 years. Meeting Mamiko wasn’t the end of my journey. It was simply the next step along a path that continued to unfold for an entire year until we were able to be together. Along the way, I hadn’t given up. I hadn’t tried to force anything. I trusted that the Universe would lead me where I wanted to go. There’s no need to worry or feel desperate because you can’t see the whole path before you. You don’t need to give in to frustration because it’s taking more steps than you expected. Keep taking the next step, and the next.. You can look at every single journey in your life as a healing journey. Here’s why: Your higher self—and by extension the Universe—always knows what you want, usually better than you do. You cannot express a desire without your higher self (and the Universe) simultaneously lining up a path for you to experience the fulfillment of that desire. That’s how this Universe works. So, “the journey” is essentially the process of you learning how to get out of your own way and allow the Universe to show you the most joyful, efficient path to everything you desire. And to my mind, that is always a journey of healing. It’s a process of releasing—in other words, healing—whatever thoughts and beliefs are holding you back. It’s about healing a limiting perspective, healing your relationship with yourself, and healing your relationship with the Universe. Every journey in life is, in some way, a healing journey. And if you're someone who's keen to help others heal, I believe this is an essential key to understanding both yourself and everyone you interact with. Take a deep breath and gently remind yourself that it's a journey. The Universe is guiding you to each step along the path, and your job is simply to focus on doing the five or fifty. I still remember the first time I discovered energy healing. It was the first day of my first Healing Touch workshop, and we were learning how to sense subtle energy with our hands. And I could feel it. I could actually feel invisible energy with my hands. It was mind blowing. What amazed me almost as much was that everyone else in the room could feel it too. People of different ages, backgrounds, religions, cultures, and life experiences were all discovering that they could sense and work...
